Abstract
Possible interactions between curatives of a sulphenamide accelerated sulphur vulcanizing system have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Comparison of the thermograms reveals that in most cases reactions occurred between combinations of two or three of these curatives. However, the most favourable reaction appears to be complex formation between the compounding ingredients zinc oxide, stearic acid and the sulphenamide accelerator. This finding supports the often quoted initial step in the accelerated sulphur vulcanization of natural rubber.
