Abstract

The number of offenders serving prison sentences for sexual offences has increased dramatically over the last fifteen years. Given that the vast majority of these offenders are serving determinate sentences it is important that effective interventions, aimed at reducing the risk such offenders present to the community on their release from prison, are vigorously implemented. In 1993 the Department of Justice produced proposals for a structured, offence-focused treatment programme for sex offenders. This programme was set up in 1994 in Arbour Hill and so far thirty offenders have been recruited into it. The programme is described, progress to date is evaluated and suggestions are made as to how this work might usefully be developed in the future.
