J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 1996; 35: 1110-1119 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (251) Google Scholar ), and many children with anxiety disorders suffer from other psychiatric conditions such as oppositional defiant disorder, major depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or substance abuse. Few studies have examined treatment response in anxious children with comorbid conditions. As a result, many child and adolescent psychiatrists struggle to manage these clinically challenging children. This article outlines principles for such management based primarily on our experience; we have both run specialized anxiety disorders clinics for children.
