Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of using fine water spray for the extinction of fires in computer cabinets; water is advanced as an alternative to halon gases, which are currently in use and are considered hazardous to human life and environment. The present simulation model is directed toward the study of the effectiveness of the use of fine water spray in extinguishing fires in confined spaces comparable in size to computer cabinets. The model is validated against two steady-state, three-dimensional fire cases before being applied to simulate a fire in the computer cabinet and its subsequent extinction by water spray. The results indicate that the water spray flow should be adjusted to absorb at least 10 times the heat liberated by the combustible material in the cabinet before the fire comes to extinction.
