Abstract
Abstract The goal setting literature has failed to specifically define the construct of goal difficulty. This has resulted in research using various operationalizations of goal difficulty which may or may not be construct valid. This manuscript explores how various motivational theories have defined goal difficulty and presents a conceptual definition. The construct validity of past operationalizations of goal difficulty is examined in light of this definition. Implications for operationalizing goal difficulty in future goal setting research are discussed.
