Abstract

The authors consider a tape helix separated from a concentric conducting core by a dielectric substrate. A characteristic equation that rigorously accounts for the substrate and conducting core is derived for the propagation constant beta . For a given geometry, the characteristic equation can be solved numerically to produce the complete k- beta diagram. The k- beta diagram for an infinite helical geometry having tape radius 1.0 m, core radius 0.8 m, substrate relative permittivity 1.0, and tape pitch angle 10 degrees is shown. The ratio of tape width to period along the axial direction is 1.0*10/sup -5/. >
