Tavard, a Roman Catholic from France, was professor emeritus of theology at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He was a peritus conciliaris at the Second Vatican Council and was a member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Preparatory Commission. Fr Tavard died in August 2007. This paper was prepared for a lecture delivered to the Commission on Christian Unity of the Massachusetts Council of Churches' Plenary Session on Ecumenical Hospitality in 2006.Search for more papers by this author George H.
