Abstract

Mirza Hadi Ruswa is one of the best Urdu prose writer. “Umrao-Jan-Adda” is the well known novel that reflects the muslim society in the nothren india. It depicts the picture of Lakhnavi society and socio-cultural values of that times. The article discusses the main issues of this society such as conflict between adapting the good or bad values, devaluation of cultural and conflict between dependent and inde-pendent powers. Ruswa’s attention is to portray the detailed picture of society of nineteenth century in Lakhnow. The most important is that it gives the whole image of social manner of society. It sheds light on the problem particularly faced by women and how they were forced to become prostitude. The forced to become prostitute. The narrative technique of this novel is somewhat unique.
