Abstract

The synthesis and properties of the tetrameric cobalt(II) complex [Co4O(C7H5N2)6], where C7H5N2-is the anion of 7-azaindole (1H-pyrrolo[2,3- b]pyridine), are reported. A tetrameric molecular structure is indicated by the mass spectrum. The electronic spectrum is consistent with a tetrahedral environment about each cobalt atom. The compound displays antiferromagnetic behaviour which conforms to simple Heisenberg theory over the liquid nitrogen temperature range. The fitted exchange constant J is c. -16 cm-1.
