Abstract
Charge independence in the strong interactions has been tested by examining the backward cross sections for pion-nucleon scattering from 150 to 600 MeV. In contrast to the conclusion suggested by previous data, present data reveal no compelling evidence for a violation. At 425 MeV, an upper limit (90% confidence) of 0.3 is found for the ratio of the magnitude of the isospin violating amplitude to the magnitude of the π + elastic scattering amplitude.
