Abstract

The paper gives an account of the test facility constructed and the initial tests carried out on the axial turbine of a turbo-charger unit of the type used on large diesel engines. The subject is introduced by explaining the role of the pulse turbine and how it differs from the steady-flow turbine. Previous work on the subject is also reviewed briefly. Next the experimental set-up is described with reference to the measurements of turbine power, turbine mass flow, the instantaneous pressure at the turbine inlet and outlet and the instantaneous temperature at the turbine inlet. The quasi-steady method of estimating the turbine performance is discussed and the preliminary results are analysed by this method. The preliminary results confirmed that the power and mass flow ratios are dependent upon the pulse frequency and demonstrated that there is an additional dependence upon the pulse shape.
