Abstract

ABSTRACT A tertiary prevention program focusing on relapse prevention and facilitating the adjustment of individuals completing their drug-free treatment in a therapeutic community (TC) is described. Clients leaving the TC were provided ongoing contacts with an Intensive Case Manager (ICM) for a period of six months; the frequency and intensity of contacts varied according to the ICM's assessment of the client's risk of relapsing. The client's initial weariness changed to acceptance, and the program helped the majority of clients to remain abstinent. For the minority of clients who relapsed, the program helped to reduce the length and severity of the relapse experience.
