Abstract

Social skills programs have typically neglected the social skills of giving and receiving criticism, which recent studies indicate is a significant area of concern for college and university counseling services. A pretreatment interview and assessment is followed by a cognitive behavioral training program which includes cognitive restructuring, modeling, behavior rehearsal, homework, social support, and encouragement of in vivo practice between sessions. Brief commentary is given on the common themes and issues that emerge in the course of this type of group program.
