Abstract
A simple low-cost proportional temperature controller is described that can be used to maintain a constant temperature in a bath over a period of several weeks. The emitter-base junction of a silicon transistor is used to sense the temperature and a switch mode power control is used in the output. The observed temperature variation is less than +or-0.05 K at 320 K. The system is protected against power failures by a battery backup and is ideally useful for crystal growth from solution of long duration.
