Abstract

A system was designed to follow-up three chronic diseases: cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Patient evolution can be studied daily without hospitalization. The necessary physiological data are captured by patients with the appropriated devices; this information is uploaded to Internet and a web application stores it in a database. Physicians log in the web application to study their patients; graphic tools were developed to help this analysis. Patients are registered in the system during their first visit to the physician. This operation mode allows medical treatment can be adjusted as soon it is necessary; and medical care is improved. The system is composed by devices to get the necessary parameters, a mobile telephonic terminal to process and upload the data received from the medical devices and a web application to manage and display all information associated to each patient. Two alternatives are available as mobile telephonic terminal: an Android application was developed to run on a mobile telephone and a low-cost telephonic terminal was created to make the same function. Any commercial devices to measure blood glucose and blood pressure can be used, but a onechannel ECG device was developed to get this signal. If commercial devices have Bluetooth capability, a link to transmit the information is set. Otherwise, parameter values are introduced manually using a friendly interface. Algorithms were implemented for ECG processing; noise is minimized applying a band pass filter. The QRS complexes are detected and classified using and energy collector; heart rate and premature beat rate are computed. The data upload is based on HTTP protocol. The ECG device was tested according to the IEC 60601-2- 47 standard. The Android application was tested with 600 oneminute ECG strips without errors. ECG processing algorithms were evaluated with the MIT-BIH database; the sensitivity in QRS complex detection was 98.77%.
