Abstract

Describes a technique for measuring the 'sucking' pressures of bottle-fed infants. The system is based on standard feeding bottle components and therefore the regime used during a study can closely resemble the regime that is used for 'normal' feeding. The system provides a semi-quantitative way of assessing the sucking process which can be used to assess the efficacy of the oral prosthesis and special teats that are currently available for infants with cleft palates. In addition to this, such a system could prove useful in evaluating new prostheses and new specialist teats as they are developed, since there is currently no objective method of assessment.
