Abstract
An experimental technique using raised surface gauges has been developed to separate and identify bending and membrane strains when one side only of a plate or shell structure is available. The manufacture and geometry of one particular size of raised surface gauge is discussed fully, together with the method of calculation of stresses from the measured strains. Raised surface gauges would have many applications in pressure vessel stress analysis.
