A technique for mechanical ventilation of anaesthetised small animal patients

Abstract

This article describes the use of a time cycled flow generating pressure limited mechanical ventilator in combination with a Mapleson E circuit using an ‘air piston’. The use of controlled rebreathing to maintain a normal end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration is explained, in combination with the practicalities of setting up the system.
