Abstract

We present a systematic technique of knowledge modelling called the inferential modelling technique which aids knowledge engineers in constructing a conceptual model of a domain during the knowledge-based system development process. The technique is derived from a domain independent classification of knowledge types and inferences called the inferential model. The technique can be used in conjunction with bottom-up analysis techniques such as verbal protocol analysis or content analysis. We apply the technique to model the chemical engineering domain of solvent selection for carbon dioxide removal processes. Some results from the application are presented. >
