Abstract

Naugatuck River Valley. Through its Department of Community Health, the hospital conducts classes and a planned program of individual instruction, for diabetic patients and their families, chiefly for inpatients. The classes were started because of the high readmission rate for patients with diabetes. When questioned, many of these patients had only a superficial understanding of the disease. As the nurse in the Department of Community Health, with the help of a dietitian, I teach classes which cover five topics: What is Diabetes?, Complications of Diabetes, Diet and Diabetes, Blood and Urine Testing in Diabetes, and Medicines Used in Diabetes. The same subjects are covered in individual instruction.
