Abstract

There can no longer be any doubt that the physics departments of universities and colleges of technology will grow rapidly in the next few years. Most of us will hope, possibly in vain, that student-staff ratios will not increase over this period but, even were they reduced, the mere accretion of staff in large numbers may create a teaching problem rather than solve it. It is this problem and its solution which I discuss in this article.
