Abstract

The objective of this teaching approach is to show the relationship between the scientific method and the processes by which one establishes and clarifies his values. It involves the interaciton of student groups which have been assigned one aspect of a community problem, specifically the disposal of solid waste in sanitary landfills. The geology, economics, politics and social aspects of a landfill site in Wisconsin are studied by the groups. The format of the exercise is designed to show the implications of scientific data for the processes of choosing, prizing, and acting on values. This approach is not an attempt to tell students what their values should be but is an attempt to show the implications of the knowledge and capabilities that are derived from science.
