Abstract

We propose a novel Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) estimation method exploiting the downlink Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) of the Long Term Evolution (LTE). The conventional correlation method can’t calculate the time difference less than one sampling interval. Therefore, we calculate the phase to estimate the TDOA by establishing the one-to-one relationship between the phase and the time delay. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method can estimate the time difference from 0 to 1 sampling interval accurately and is well suited for timing estimation purposes in LTE location-awareness services.
