Abstract

Placement of the Virtual Machines (VMs), in context of cloud computing can be described as an operation of providing appropriate mapping between virtual machines (VMs) and physical machines (PMs). It basically aims at finding a physical machine (PM) which is best to host the virtual machines (VM). VM placement can also be understood as the method of finding most appropriate host for the VM. It aims at maximizing usage of available resources and saving of power by shutting down some servers when not in use. VM placement schemes can be categorized on the basis of type of placement algorithm to be used. Some of the algorithms for placement of virtual machines are discussed here.
