Abstract
In the present paper the literature on male sexual dysfunction, with specific reference to subjective dispositions, is reviewed. On the basis of an examination of psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, and systemically oriented literature, six generic themes in subjective meaning are isolated and depicted via the presentation of “covert statements.” Regardless of theoretical orientation, the concept of subjective meaning is central to an understanding of psychogenic sexual dysfunction. The manner in which subjective meaning is considered from each perspective and the general form of explanation utilized is addressed. Implications for research and treatment are discussed
