Abstract
A task-based specification methodology for expert system specification that is independent of the problem solving architecture, that can be applied to many expert system applications, that focuses on what the knowledge is, not how it is implemented, that introduces the major concepts involved gradually, and that supports verification and validation is discussed. To evaluate the methodology, a specification of R1/SOAR, an expert system that reimplements a major portion of the R1 expert system, was reverse engineered.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
