Abstract

With changes in medical technology and the re-deployment of scarce health resources it is becoming increasingly common for hospitals to have all or part of their functions radically altered over a brief span of time. The following is an account of a nurse education course devised at short notice to meet the needs of such a change. The course was planned by identifying required professional competencies and assessing the psycho-social climate of the hospital. It was provided on two occasions in 11 study days over a period of 3 weeks in each case. It was evaluated by summative assessment of participants' cognitive learning, concurrent subjective evaluation by the course organisers, immediate evaluation by the participants and a questionnaire administered to the participants 6 months later. In general the cognitive and skills components of the course seem to have been acquired and are being utilised. So far as it is possible to judge, participants seem to have been helped to come to terms with major change.
