Abstract

A new method is described for the simple and straight-forward evaluation of a material’s resistance to blanching, a mode of degradation that limits the life and performance of rocket engine thrust-cell liners. The method is based on cyclic exposure to oxidation and reduction with continuous monitoring of weight changes. Results obtained so far are in excellent agreement with known and expected blanching behavior of available Cu alloys, showing that this method provides an effective screening test for blanching susceptibility.
