Abstract

Medication adherence affects the management of diabetes mellitus as a chronic disease. Due to the significant economic and health system burden, it is imperative to understand the complex dynamics related to diabetes mellitus and medication adherence and to use this knowledge to make informed decisions to ensure positive outcomes. This objective may be advanced by understanding the complex system factors and associated relationships in a holistic manner. System dynamics, a systems thinking approach, is applied to explore important factors and factor relationships associated to medication adherence for patients with diabetes mellitus. This paper discusses important factors related to medication adherence and presents a causal model that graphically illustrates key factor relationships.
