Abstract

A system for an on-line analogue display of beat-by-beat cardiac output and other cardiovascular functions is described. The phasic aortic blood flow signal, derived from an electromagnetic flowmeter with the flow probe implanted around the ascending aorta, drives a multi-channel recorder with a combination of associated signal conditioning input couplers and peripheral electronic circuitry, to provide a continuous analogue display of beat-by-beat phasic stroke volume, integrated stroke volume, heart rate, and cardiac output. These cardiovascular functions, which permit instantaneous on-line feedback of these parameters, were all derived from the single aortic flow measurement.
