Abstract

Syntactic pattern recognition is proposed for seismic discrimination. Seismic waves are divided into fixed-length segments and then converted into sentences i.e., a string of primitives, where the primitives are selected by clustering procedures. The nearest-neighbor decision rule is applied for classification. The dynamic programming technique is used for string distance computation. Pattern grammar and parsing are briefly discussed. The experimental results of real earthquake/explosion data are presented; the satisfactory results show a promising future of the syntactic approach.
