Abstract

The genus Chazaliella was first mentioned by Petit in his revision of the African species of Psychotria (in Bull. Jard. Bot. Brux. 34: 23 (1964)) but not formally described. A formal description was given by Verdcourt (in Kew Bull. 30: 267 (I975)) since validation was needed for the account of the genus in Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Rubiaceae, I (1976); new combinations were made for the species at the same time without, it must be admitted, any very detailed study. It seemed advisable that an attempt should be made to revise the genus but the species have proved difficult and are mostly rather featureless and morphologically uninteresting. The preliminary results obtained are recorded here. Miss M. Bywater and Mr. G. P. Lewis have prepared the illustrations and maps, for which I am most grateful.
