Abstract

A key to the twenty-four species of Swertia (Gentianaceae) occurring in East and northeast tropical Africa is provided. Two new subspecies and one new variety are briefly described. Seven taxa have had their taxonomic status changed. Alterations to the nomenclature of the taxa are made preliminary to the account of the family for Flora of Ethiopia and Flora of East Tropical Africa. Ecological notes and distribution are given for each species. Brief taxonomic comments are given on some critical species. Recent chromosome counts of some species are provided.
