Abstract
The genus Fuirena is morphologically distinct from other related genera in the tribe Fuireneae. The genus has a grass-like appearance, leafy nodose stem and a paniculate inflorescence. Fuirena was described by Rottboll (1773) after the discovery of E umbellata by Rolander in Surinam. Two other genera, Pentasticha and Vanginaria, were later described, also for material with a leafy nodose stem and a paniculate inflorescence. Pentasticha (Turczaninow 1862) has a needle-like perianth while Vanginaria (Persoon 1805) has leaf blades reduced to sheaths, thus differing from Fuirena which has laminate perianth segments and well-developed leaf blades. However, Oteng-Yeboah (1974) treated Pentasticha and Vanginaria as subgenera of Fuirena on the basis that their overall similarities outnumber their dissimilarities
