Abstract

Results of experiments on the effect of ionizing radiation on SO 2 oxidation and subsequent aerosol formation are analyzed. Aerosol formation and growth under various irradiation conditions are described by means of a numerical aerosol model. This allows one to distinguish between the role played by ion-induced aerosol formation and enhanced SO 2 oxidation by radiolytic reactions when a photolytic aerosol is irradiated with γ radiation. Under some conditions, a synergism exists between u.v. and γ radiation in the oxidation of SO 2 in the homogeneous gas phase.
