Abstract

This chapter includes strategies for developing music theory skills for first-year students. Students are presented with a definition of music theory and an explanation of the value of developing music theory skills. A basic overview of a traditional multi-semester music theory curriculum, based in classical music theory is included alongside some examples of less-traditional pedagogical models. Attitude and perspective as necessary skills for success in music theory are discussed. Academic strategies for developing music theory skills are introduced. Finally, the relationships between music theory, music history, aural skills, and class piano are explored. Questions for discussion and an assignment are included.
