Abstract

The paper makes an empirical study on the use of language learning strategies in an online multimedia environment by a group of medical undergraduate students. A survey was administered to 238 medical undergraduate students from Peking University Health Science Center. The findings of the research suggest that the overall situation of learning strategy use by this group of Chinese college students is not satisfactory, and the least frequently employed strategies are social and affective strategies. The study also shows statistically significant differences between higher achievers and lower achievers in cognitive, memory and compensation strategy uses in general, and some sub-category strategy uses in particular. Suggestions are discussed for further improvement of online language instruction and learning strategy training. Key words: Language learning strategies; Internet and multimedia; English learning; CET-4 College English Test ( Band 4 ); Medical undergraduate students
