Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of sensor nodes deployed to collect information about sur rounding environment. Their distributed nature, multichip data forwarding, and open wireless medium are the factors that make WSNs highly vulnerable to security attacks at various levels. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) can play an important role in detecting and preventing security attacks. WSNs are particularly vulnerable to various attacks at different layers of the protocol stack. Many IDS have been proposed to secure WSNs. But all these systems operate in a single layer of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, or do not consider the interaction and collaboration between these layers. Consequently, these systems are mostly inefficient and would drain out the WSN energy. A new IDS based on cross layer interaction between the network, MAC and physical layers. Indeed, we will address the problem of intrusion detection in a different way in which the concept of cross layer is widely used leading to the birth of a new type of IDS. Keywords: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), OSI model, intrusion detection system (IDS), Cross-Layer Intrusion Detection (CLIDS)
