Abstract

Maternal mortality continues to increase globally despite advances in clinical care, and parturient complexity continues to grow, concurrent with rates of morbid obesity, advanced maternal age, multiple gestation, and survival of patients with congenital diseases into adulthood. Fellowship-trained obstetric anesthesiologists who are familiar with national and international recommendations and best practices are required in all countries to appropriately care for these highest-risk patients. Studies suggest improved maternal outcomes are associated with fellowship-trained anesthesiologists.
