Abstract
ABSTRACTThis paper is a survey typology of typical Antelope House Quids (chewed and other modified vegetal objects) from 34 proveniences in 16 rooms. More than a thousand quids so far have been studied and compared with my own chewings of plant material. The quids show a consistent diversity of types. The most important plant taxa of quids are Yucca, Zea, and Phaseolus. Y. boccata is the common fiber in yucca leaf quids. Yucca leaf quids were chewed for nutriment, could supply short cordage, served as strainers, “tea bags”, or dye bundles, and were used as wash pads. Rootlets were chewed, but caudex seldom was chewed. Zea husk was chewed for nourishment. Additives to the husk created pastile quids sucked for recreation. Abrasive pads also were formed from husk. Phaseolus strings are found in clean wads, with bean paste, or as fecal drops. Some string quids were formed around a yucca rootlet.
