Abstract

Sixteen species of Chalcides can be distinguished by means of morphological and geographical criteria. There are five species groups. Three of the groups are relictual, contain few, distinctive species, and show an advanced stage of the scincid trend toward slimmer habitus and limb reduction. The primitive five digited, lacertiform ocellatus species group has a vast continuous range, with nine similar species, some of which may be species complexes. A key to currently recognizable species is given.
