Abstract

A survey of the cascade-induced alignment effects in beam-foil experiments is given. The cascade term in zero field quantum beats has been obtained in a density-matrix formalism using irreducible tensorial operators. The cascade corrections have been calculated for experiments in the presence of a magnetic field(decay-curve observations and Hanle experiments with or without time resolution). It would appear that the Hanle experiments without time resolution are less sensitive to the cascade effects.
