Abstract

Abstract Seventeen species of Campylopus are recognized in Australia. They are illustrated and included in a key. Remarks on the taxonomy and distribution are given for each species. Campylopus brassii Bartr. is regarded as synonymous with C. perauriculatus Broth. and C. wattsii Broth. with C. flexuosus (Hedw.) Brid. Campylopus chilensis De Not. is an earlier name for C. flavonigritus Dus. and C. incrassatus C. Muell. for C. flavo-viridis Dus. Campylopus woollsii (C. Muell.) Par. has been shown to be C. pyriformis (Schultz) Brid. Campylopus catarractilis (C. Muell.) Par., C. comosus (Reinw. & Hornsch.) Bosch & Lac., C. involutus (C. Muell.) Jaeg., and C. schmidii (C. Muell.) Jaeg. (= C. aureus Bosch & Lac.) are reported as new to Australia Campylopus kirkii Mitt. var. pilosus J.-P. Frahm is synonymous with the Patagonian C. acuminatus Mitt. Campylopus eberhardtii Par. has to replace C. excurrens Dix. This species is not endemic to Queensland but widespread in S.E. Asia.
