As the medical profession has reduced infantile mortality, improved sanitation, developed antibiotics and learned to deal with epidemic diseases, there has been a constant shift towards an increase in the frequency of degenerative diseases, like hypertension, arteriosclerosis, cancer, and their sequelae. Arteriosclerosis is thus becoming an ever growing problem and it will continue to grow in importance as the population becomes older.
