Abstract

Research shows that education related to interpersonal violence varies greatly among nursing programs. Two hundred fifty-one nurses in East Texas were surveyed to determine screening and intervention practices, knowledge of the legal requirements, time devoted to educational preparation, and perceived educational needs regarding interpersonal violence. The findings support the reports of other studies that there is disparity in nursing education regarding interpersonal violence and a need among practicing nurses for further assistance to become comfortable with and effective in assessment and intervention in cases involving interpersonal violence. This study suggests that there is an opportunity to intervene and respond more effectively to interpersonal violence by providing curricula that are ongoing and disseminated to direct providers.Nurs Outlook 2002;50:137-43.
