Abstract

A survey was carried out of the practice and opinions of consultant obstetricians in the Trent Regional Health Authority regarding amniocentesis in the prevention of Down's Syndrome. The survey suggests that if current practice continues, an insufficient proportion of pregnancies to women aged 35+ will be screened in order to reduce substantialy the incidence of Down's syndrome. Important factors are the maternal age used in selection by consultants, the latest gestational age at which an amniocentesis might be considered, and the necessity in some cases for the patient to initiate the request for amniocentesis. Amniocentesis is predominantly considered to be the responsibility of individual consultant firms, and sub-regional units for this procedure are not recommended.
