Abstract

Manifold learning is an emerging research domain of machine learning and helps to overcome the limits of standard neural networks which are restricted to Euclidean spaces. In this work, we give an introduction into manifold learning and how it is employed for important application fields in multimedia like similarity search, image classification, synthesis & enhancement, video analysis, 3D data processing and nonlinear dimension reduction. Furthermore, we present available open source software frameworks for manifold learning. One can see from this survey that manifold learning has a lot of potential for computer vision and multimedia.
