Abstract
Introduction Surveys of spontaneous neoplasms in captive wild mammals and birds in Zoological collections are infrequently reported. In the United States, surveys have been carried out at the Philadelphia Zoological Gardens,8 San Diego Zoological Gardens4 and Washington National Zoological Park10. In the United Kingdom, Appleby and Keymer1,2,3 have documented tumors at the Zoological Society of London between 1966 and 1971. This study was carried out at the Zoological Society of London between 1976 and 1983 and records a series of 101 tumors found in mammals and birds. Some of the mammalian cases6'711131619'21 and avian cases121415171820'22 in this series have been described in detail elsewhere.
