Abstract

This study reports on lodging executives' views and expectations regarding student internship programs. Research results indicate that students should: (1) pursue internships during all years of study and in multiple departmental areas, (2) study under mentors for up to four hours a week, and (3) have equivalent to one year of line-level experience upon internship completion. Findings project a rise in future support and commitment from lodging properties. However, lodging executives' expectations regarding internship work hours and tenure still exceeds academic program designs currently being offered. Thus, implications of this study include hospitality educators and lodging professionals collaboratively developing effective internship program designs.
