Abstract

K N O W L E D G E of medical and nursing staffing levels and availability of essential equipment and support services is necessary for the satisfactory study and comparison of perinatal mortality and morbidity resulting from perinatal insults in different units. Although analyses of the delivery of obstetric and neonatal care have been performed in the United States t, Europe and the United Kingdom 2, little similar information has been compiled from Irish obstetric and paediatric departments. The Irish Perinatal Society therefore undertook during late 1985 to circularise maternity units staffed by consultant obstetricians and/or paediatricians in the Republic in order to initiate the collection of an Irish database.
